An update regarding recent byelaw changes for powers of the Chair at the Spiritualists' National Union Annual General Meeting ('AGM')

We would like to clarify and reassure members who have expressed concern or uncertainty about a recent change in the byelaws. There has been considerable commentary and speculation online, and we would like to take this opportunity to outline what has been changed, and why.

The changes have been made, quite simply, to codify the standard powers and duties of the Chair, accorded to other organisations for public meetings, and which are in line with other constitutions such as government public bodies. As the Chair becomes increasingly responsible for controlling anything which could, for instance, constitute a breach of data protection or GDPR, amongst other concerns and priorities, it is important that their ability to do so is codified and official.

This is a move taken by a professional organisation safeguarding its officials, members and attendees, and undertaking its business in a responsible fashion. There is no intent to stifle contributions or silence members in any way.

An announcement will be made at the start of this year’s AGM in respect of Any Other Business (‘AOB’), but in order to not preclude anyone, for this first year, people can email any other general business to general manager, Rachael Loukes, on [email protected] no later than 11am on the day of the meeting.
